DeYoung & Sons

DeYoung and Sons Furniture has been serving its customers through its stores since 1928. The business is operated and managed by four current owner/partners, related by birth or marriage. The four current owner/partners are John DeYoung, Tom McGehee, Jerry DeYoung, and Bob Scheuneman.

John and Jerry's grandparents, Nick and Cora DeYoung, started the business in 1928 when they opened a combination funeral home/furniture store at the South Holland location. While it may seem unorthodox now, linking funeral homes and furniture stores was not unusual in small towns back then. Many times, furniture makers were also casket makers. With the success of the South Holland store, Gerry DeYoung opened a second furniture store and funeral home in Lansing in 1939.

However, by the 1940's, the DeYoungs realized their business had grown to such a point, they would have to choose one business or another. They chose furniture. This decision was strongly supported by their customers, as they wanted more selection and the stores needed more display space for added inventory.

Nick and Cora DeYoung eventually retired and turned the business over to their sons, Gerry, Arnold, and Sidney. The three brothers retired in 1993. Gerry is father to Jerry and father-in-law to Bob Scheuneman. Sidney is John's father, and Arnold is Tom McGehee's father-in-law.

Relationships, both within the family and with customers, have always played a key role in the success of DeYoung & Sons. During the Depression, the store owners would let customers pay for their purchases when they could. This began the building of customer loyalty that has helped to keep DeYoung & Sons strong, even with the mega-malls and major department stores opening in surrounding areas.

In fact, not too many years ago, there were eight different furniture stores in Lansing and nearby Lynwood. DeYoung & Sons is one of only three to survive. With the addition of licensed on-staff interior decorators, the extension of business hours, and the addition of our gorgeous new expansive location in St. John, Indiana, DeYoung & Sons continues its tradition of serving its customers by providing quality furniture at competitive prices.
